How to become a self-taught artist | The ultimate guide

Artists do not necessarily have to attend art schools to have a perfect right to call themselves artists.

There are many courses available about art for free online.

Have you been wondering how one can learn to paint on their own?

Here in this article, I will be expressing how one can become a self-taught artist.

So now let’s move into the material proper.

What is self-teaching?

In my opinion, self-teaching means that someone is not attending a traditional school or a course where you have a student-teacher direct relationship.

Establishing your own goal?

Firstly you have to decide what is your goal. What are you going to do with your art skill?

There could be many things like starting your own studio, working on your dream studio, making children’s story books, etc. After deciding your goal you can visualize your goal. Before going to bed you can think about your goal and dream it in your sleep. It sounds silly but if you can visualize that you can understand whether the goal is right or wrong.

Gathering learning materials?

After selecting your goal you have to gather learning materials. You have to select what course you are going to follow. There are many courses available online for free. Also, you can find free courses on YouTube. If you have the money you can also purchase a course from a reputed artist.

Building a curriculum?

After gathering learning materials you have to build a curriculum. You have to learn the basics. After that, you have to increase your difficulty level slowly. Also, you have to decide how much time you will spend practicing your art each day.

Short-term goals?

After deciding study schedule you have to set a short-term goal. You have to divide the main goal into many short goals. So those short goals you can achieve in a short time. Because of that, you will stay motivated. Big goal takes a long time because of that many people give up on their goals. But if you divide the big goal into many short goals that will be easy to complete and it will help you to stay motivated.

Document and her progress?

You can save your all sketchbooks and organize them by date or do the same digitally and save them as folders. Also, you can share your art on any Discord server and any Facebook group. If you share your art on there much better artists will help you to improve and you will remember you are not alone in working on your goal.

Challenging, not overwhelming?

You need to know practice should be challenging, not overwhelming. If your practice gets overwhelming you will give up on your goal in a short period of time. This is why I am suggesting dividing one big goal into many short goals.

Control your inner voice?

Your mind will tell you to stop and do it another time. Don’t listen to the mind. You have to work hard to achieve your goal.

Use daily focus properly?

Science tells us that we get about three to four hours of focus each day. We don’t have this time to waste on social media or video games. You have to use this time for your art practice properly each day.

These are the things that will help you to become a self-taught artist.
